The type of firewood you burn in your chimney greatly affects the outcome of the fire. Wet wood or “green wood” that has too much moisture will create a lot of smoke but not much heat, which in turn ends up wasting your time and money. To ensure your chimney fire is safe and efficient, here’s how to select and store the right firewood.
Buy seasoned wood
Good quality seasoned firewood will make a huge difference in how efficient your chimney is. It will burn cleaner which in turn will reduce odor, smoke and creosote buildup. Creosote buildup can lead to a chimney fire, so it’s important to eliminate it by buying the right type of wood and by getting an annual chimney sweep and creosote removal. Firewood should be dried until its moisture content is less than 20 percent. Seasoning wood takes time, so if you’re doing it yourself, plan to dry wood for at least 6 months before burning it. If you’re buying seasoned wood, there are a couple of ways you can tell if it’s really seasoned. First, the bark will be loosened and easily knocked off when handling. The fire log will also be lighter and the ends will have darkened and started to crack. For more tips on seasoned wood, click here.
How to store/stack
When storing firewood it’s important to keep it in a dry environment. Too much moisture will cause the wood to rot before it can be used. To avoid bottom rot, wood should be stored off the ground. Stack pieces for proper ventilation and drainage by not stacking too tightly and avoiding long vertical seams. If you don’t have a woodshed, the best way to store wood is in a sunny location, but cover the pile with a tarp or thick shingles when it rains or snows to keep moisture out. Burning wet wood is a waste of your money and damaging to your chimney. If you’re in need of a chimney repair, contact the Oregon Chimney Guys of Eugene!
