Here at the Oregon Chimney Guys, we do more than provide chimney repairs and cleanings, we also handle the removal of moss from your roof. We want to help you learn how to prevent this from becoming an issue at all. We do offer an annual zinc spray that is very effective at preventing moss, but there are also a few steps that you can take on your own that will help your roof stay moss-free.
Option 1: If you’re about to put a new roof on, use shingles that have been chemically treated. Professional roofing companies will be able to give you more information about what shingles will work best for your house.
Option 2: Purchase metal flashing for the ridge of your roof. This goes on the very top of your house and slightly drapes over either side of the roof. As the rain comes in (as it frequently does here in Eugene, Oregon) the minerals from the metal will wash down the roof and prevent a surface for moss to grow.
Option 3: Trim branches that hang over the house. This helps prevent the growth of moss by allowing more sunlight to reach your house which helps because, as you know, moss requires moisture to grow.
Option 4: Clear the moss from your property. By clearing all the area around your house of moss, you eliminate the spores that find their way to your roof. Did you know that even a nearby neighbor with a mossy roof will increase the risk of spores finding their way to your roof? Unfortunately there’s nothing we can suggest for you to do about your neighbor’s moss problem, other than informing them of the dangers that you know moss brings and directing them to this blog!
If any of these options don’t work or if you feel more comfortable leaving this in the hands of the same professionals that have been providing expert chimney repair and maintenance services here in Eugene, Oregon, give us a call and we will be happy to talk to you about our options!
